Birchwood Retreat
project narrative
The Birchwood Retreat
Set within a sprawling coffee plantation in Suntikoppa, Coorg, the retreat at Koorgahalli Estate emerges as an immersive landscape experience, where architecture dissolves into the terrain, and every intervention is guided by the quiet intelligence of the land.
Rather than imposing upon the site, the design responds—shaped by the existing tree cover, the gentle slope of the land, and the layered ecology of the plantation. Built as a shared retreat within a larger estate, it becomes a space that connects people not just to place, but to the culture and rhythms that define it.
The planning unfolds as a constellation of pavilions lightly placed between trees, linked by water and pathways that follow the natural contours. Spaces open, close, and transition seamlessly—allowing breeze, light, and rain to choreograph the experience. The architecture remains porous, adaptive, and deeply climate-responsive, creating comfort through orientation, ventilation, and shade rather than reliance on mechanical systems.
At Koorgahalli, architecture is not an object but an experience, one that listens, adapts, and quietly coexists, allowing the estate to remain the true protagonist.
