RELATION OF PROPOSAL WITH SANCTA SOPHIA
City of Istanbul offers a rarest of rare opportunity to visualize a built form where two civilizations, two cultures, two religions, two styles, two continents, two beliefs meet each other. The organization of site is so designed that it reminds us of junction of two lands, separated by a water body. The water body further helps catch its reflection in water whichever way one looks at it as seen in case of” Blue Mosque”. The proposal carries forward the legacy of monuments city has and all the world citizens who visit Istanbul cannot afford to miss this unique piece of art- a magnified sculpture- also used as an Institute of disaster management. Istanbul will never hesitate in adopting this new family member in its city fabric. Each time flight lands of takes off this masterpiece will either welcome or offer a nostalgic farewell. Istanbul has a series of buildings with strong silhouettes, and this would proudly add to its list.
DEDICATED DESIGN PROCESS
Such a unique expression deserves an approach beyond conventional parameters. The plan form is conceived as a canvas with free intermingling forms with very hazy boundaries as the socio-cultural structure of Istanbul. Form expressed as a piece of sculpture and the walls as a calligraphic expression. Such landmark would further add a feather in cap of “European Capital of Culture”.
CONTEXT AND ESTABLISHED IMAGERY
Strong association of domes composed in pyramidal order is one of the key elements of the context. It has been reinterpreted here in the design mounted over the cylindrical ring.
EXPERIMENT WITH CULTURAL FUSION AND FORM
Divinity of Skylight Built environment visualized as a sculpture and form as Painting with colors so mixed with each other analogous to the society of Istanbul so ecumenically mixed within the space of the traditional city of Istanbul.
WHIRLING DERVISHES AND THE PLAN FORM
The plan form is evolved out of a strong graphic interpretation of whirling dervishes. These are interpreted as calligraphy strokes and the spaces in between the two dancing artists are visualized as a space in between two adjacent activities. Analogous to a performing art this building will be seen and enjoyed from anywhere, within and from a distance. The site is truly justifying which offers this opportunity to witness this piece of art from all its sides. There is interlocking of forms, spaces, voids, similar to a performing art, and extending up to the evolved society over past twenty centuries. This plan form and volume is far beyond the common definitions of order such as symmetry, axis etc. It follows not the “physical order” but “metaphysical”. An axis of this building is in the mind of the beholder, which guides him through the space.
