This memorial building is dedicated to the great patriot and freedom fighter of Maharashtra state of India, whose name was, Lahuji Salve. He was very well known in freedom fighters of Maharashtra for his weapons training skills. Being a weapons trainer, patriot and courageous mind, he trained many freedom fighters like Vasudev Balwant Phadke, Mahatma Jyotiba Phule and Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak. As a teacher and owner of a weapon training academy, he was known as ‘Vastaad Lahuji’. This building is designed for several projects like women empowerment, health center, children development, computer training center. Health & training center named after a freedom fighter, caters to the slum dwellers in its vicinity. The building trains & takes care of its users-the neglected common man-pertaining to health care & human behavior.
Architecture of this building exhibits Vastad Lahuji’s personality and one can feel the strong ness of his body and mind. The exposed brickwork and irregular circular window pattern represents the woolen blanket which he used to keep with him every time. Inner spaces of the building create calm and strong feeling in visitors and people who lives there as well. Simplicity of materials, strong ness in architecture and inspirational environment in the building exhibits Vastad Lahuji’s existence in the building.
Its form evolved out of a desire to personify its master and participate like a living being in the mission of the center. Its architecture, meaning, and quality of space are a tribute to the centuries old legacy of variety of art & architecture of its immediate context. The built form resonate the sequence of sculptural spaces of the monuments on one hand and obeys the discipline of co-existence of form & visual art taught by the heritage of the immediate context on the other. The presence of freedom fighters reminded by the form evolved out of attributes of his personality. While we project ahead, let’s look back & search for these elements of divine permanence, untouched by space & time changes. It is the recurrent co-existence & reappearance of fusion of visual art & form during past centuries, may it be at Verul, Ajanta, the medieval period or variations with art & architecture of le Corbusier, will certainly lead us to more meaningful & livable cities of tomorrow.
