“Ranga shankara” a unique 300 seater theatre space in Bangalore has a thrust and revolving stage, the first of its kind in south India. The flat site has no features whatsoever and is surrounded by public buildings in a busy street corner. The building extends its arms to the community with a ground floor space that encourages interaction and community participation. Seamless spaces allow for impromptu gatherings and performances. The brief was to eliminate electrical amplification of sound and allow the artists to throw their voice. Amplification was necessary for music accompaniment only. The space was also to be designed for the occasional screening of serious cinema for which provision has been made with a projection booth and a temporary rigging of screen and speakers.
